What is a Soil Boring?
A soil boring is a hole that is drilled into soil or rock to identify the subsurface soil profile at a given location. The soil boring process is broken up into two phases, drilling and sampling. The drilling portion of the soil boring advances the hole downward into the earth, which is achieved by several different methods of advancement depending on the geology (We will get into these methods later); the sampling portion of the soil boring allows us to collect soil or rock samples at various depths to classify the underlying geology and develop a profile of the boring.
Classification of the soil consists of the soil type (Sand, Silt, Clay, Gravel, Rock) and the density of the material. Limited access soil borings on average extend to depths of 20 to 40 feet (which usually takes up to 2 days to complete) below the surface. However, we have drilled to depths of up to 70 feet below surface in good soil conditions. Soil borings that are advanced with a truck or ATV rig can achieve depths of up to 100 feet in about 4-8 hours depending on the soil conditions.
Why are Soil Borings Important?
Soil borings allow the geotechnical engineer to analyze the subsurface conditions of a given site. They are predominately used to analyze the soil and rocks bearing pressure, which determines the type of building foundations that will be required at the project site so the building doesn’t fail once constructed.
In New York City, the New York City Building Code has specific requirements for the number and depth of soil borings, which depends on the size of the building and the type of foundation system that will be required. Generally speaking, good dense soil or rock usually results with the building being founded on shallow foundations such as conventional spread footings that a house would be founded on. Poor soils, such as very loose sands or swampy clay soils typically require deep foundations such as piles. Outside of NYC, its up to the geotechnical engineer to determine the number, location and depth of the soil borings. All of the borings that L.A.D.S performed are under the direction of the design engineer. They determine the location and depth of each hole, based on the proposed construction.
